COMPETITION DRIVING
Not 'competition' as in full blooded F1 Stock Car Racing, but competition nevertheless in that all persons taking part compete against each other for a magnificent trophy which is awarded at the end of the day to the winning driver. This is strictly a driving day during which drivers put the skills they have learned into practice. There is a short session in the classroom to remind everyone of the dangers and of the rules of Stock Car Racing before the rest of the day is devoted to 'on-track' experience.
Each Competition Driving day, normally held only at Northampton International Raceway, is divided into two parts. After initial registration and the brief session in the classroom there is a period during which participants complete a number of solo laps in two different cars, just as they do in the driving school. A brief break for coffee is then followed by each participant being taken out as a passenger in one of the two seaters as they compete in a series of match races. We then take a somewhat longer break for a buffet lunch and to discuss the day's action so far.
The second half of the day is devoted solely to competitive racing by way of a series of pursuit races using the two F1 cars. The cars start diametrically opposite each other on the track and are timed over a number of laps. When each driver has completed the first series of races there is a short break before the whole thing is repeated again, but this time with each driver using a different car to the one used during the first race. When everyone has completed two pursuit races the aggregate times are worked out and the two fastest drivers of the day get to participate in a head to head final, with the winner taking the trophy which he or she then keeps.
For safety reasons participation in Competition Driving days is restricted to those persons who have already successfully completed the 'Live the Dream' Driving School course, or have track experience in another formula. Novice Grade BriSCA F1 drivers are not permitted to participate once they have competed in three or more race meetings.
The full cost of a Competition Driving day, including morning coffee and a full buffet lunch, is £200 per person. An additional lunch, for one friend or relative, can be provided at an additional cost of £10 per head if notified in advance. A picnic area is available at the stadium for any additional friends or relatives who attend as spectators. An advance booking fee of £75 is required for each individual participant. Block bookings of six persons or more (we take a maximum of 24) would become a booking fee of £50 per person. Booking fees are non-refundable, and the full balance is payable before the first session commences.
